The State of Us April 30, 2007

Last evening I got a chance to watch “The State of Us” on RTE television. When I first heard about this programme I was a bit sceptical that it would never equal Bull Island. However, having watched it I can say that it is truly brilliant! It’s risky enough to be good and contains some very direct references to political controversy, etc. There was an on-going sketch in last nights episode that payed homage to the Martin Cullen consultant scandal and I have to say that it had me in stitches. That was good but when Gay Byrne turns up on a Harley there are more fun and games to be had. The Pat Kenny impressionist has him down to a fine line. Not sure if this is a weekly show or how many episodes there will be but it’s well worth tuning into if you get the chance.

Your County Needs You! April 26, 2007

Many thanks to Wellboy from UpTheDeise for alerting me to this. The Monopoly crew are looking for votes on what counties should make it onto the new all-Ireland monopoly board. However, only 22 of the 32 counties will be allowed so vote now or your county will be forever, forgotten. Naturally I’m voting for Waterford and so should you. No other county offers so much in terms of beach, sea, river, mountain, city and countryside. It’s deserving of the purple tab on the Monopoly board. Vote now! source: Monopoly.ie

UPDATE: Striking this post until Hasbro Ireland make the voting process completely transparent rather than making it a blind vote for the last week of the campaign.

Bicycle Lift April 25, 2007

Just saw this on Gary G’s Blog. It’s a short video of a bicycle lift in Trondheim, Norway. Several years ago I was on schedule to travel to Trondheim for a project but never made it. Having seen this video it’s probably for the best. I used to criticise the government of this country for stupid road building activities but this just seems plainly bizarre (pardon the oxymoron). The hill doesn’t even look that steep?

Sheryl Crow proposes wipe-out! April 23, 2007

Yes, Sheryl Crow is proposing a wipe-out! A wipe-out of using too much toilet paper to wipe yours out, that is. In an attempt to curb global warming Ms Crow is suggesting a limit to the number of sheets of toilet paper that should be used per sitting (yes, I did say sitting and not in a Sean Connery accent). No doubt you’ll agree that this very touching subject has some substance to it. Okay enough puns.

Whilst I may chuckle at the intro, this topic is something that interests me. I see so many products in the supermarket, in the line of ass-wiping material, that one has to wonder exactly what we think we are? Personally I am of the opinion that luxury fit for a king, quilted like a duvet, soft as a kitten and friendly as a puppy are simply worrying depictions of people’s mindsets. Just how much pain to these people think that tissue paper can inflict on the average human? Why on earth would you want to wipe-up with a new born puppy or kitten? Have you ever picked up your duvet and said, “hmm, I wonder, just maybe…”? Furthermore the price of these products, you might as well pull out a five Euro note and go for it. Yes, I’m with Sheryl on this one, use less and don’t pay more. You wouldn’t flush your wallet down the pipes, would you? Picked up via the Register. source: Sheryl Crow : Sheryl Blog

Having a bad day? March 23, 2007

Thanks to Gary G for this link. The Alaska department of revenue seemingly had a bit of a nervous time recently when somebody accidentally deleted details of an account worth approximately $38 billion. Not only that but they also managed to mess up the back-up tapes. Me thinks somebody was a little worried at this stage. Luckily 300 boxes of paperwork came to the rescue and after successful digitisation everything is back to normal. It’s like deleting an e-mail that you didn’t want to only 38 billion times worse. source: Engadget

Cover Blown! March 19, 2007

It appears that my cover has been blown by “Super-sleuth Mulley”, even Jessica Fletcher has failed where he has succeeded. Not only has he discovered my F1 past (thankfully he didn’t mention anything about me being The Stig – ah crap! there I go) but he has also stumbled on my classified research ambitions. Seriously though, thanks for the link-back Damien, hopefully I can send some traffic your way. source: Damien Mulley

Imagine waking up in your first class seat aboard a 747 on a long haul flight to find the airborne version of a “legitimate businessmen” situation happening beside you. Well that’s what happened to Paul Trider when he woke up on a flight from Delhi to London, to find the flight crew manoeuvering a body into the seat beside him. The deceased apparently died shortly after take-off and the crew were adopting the least disruptive option to passengers. source: The Register
