Just found out that I have been named as the winner of some Feedburner goodies. I’d like to congratulate my fellow victors, Frank and Bernard T and also to thank Paul who ran the competition and Bernie G who sent me in the right direction. Finally I will have a garment to be proud of. link: Technology in plain English

Charity begins… nowhere! February 28, 2007

I’m sure that this will not come as a surprise to many but it certainly did to me. In recent times family members have gotten the urge to give something back to the community and wanted to volunteer their services to local charities and such. Amazingly the response is either we don’t want anyone right now or well you’ll have to go through an interview process and wait for some time. In addition to this we recently decided to donate some perfectly good condition items to charity and we were told that there was a waiting list to donate. What the hell? Everyday I hear about people in need and people who don’t even have the basics in life and here we have so-called charities compiling waiting lists to donate and refusing volunteer helpers. No wonder we have a poverty gap in this country that is thriving so much – you can’t help even if you try. Charity tip: if you want to help people, bypass the charities, find somebody who needs help and help them.

Personally I really hope that this doesn’t happen as I have grown quite attached to my @gmail.com address but there is a badger on Google’s arse, in a manner of speaking. Apparently another company already has rights to the gmail trademark and Google have already lost the case in the UK. If they lose the case in the US all gmail.com addresses might become googlemail.com addresses instead. That would really suck! Let’s hope that they reach an Apple/Cisco type agreement. source: WebProNews

If like me you maintain a mirror of your main blog and that mirror happens to be a conveniently free wordpress.com account but your main blog is based on MovableType then this might be interesting to you. No doubt you will have already noticed that you can import your MovableType content without any real trouble but did you know that any posts with an ampersand in the title will be duplicated each time you import to WordPress? Alas it is true and I only noticed this evening by accident when mirroring my latest content. So as a rule of thumb, if you intend to mirror MovableType in WordPress don’t use ampersands in the post titles.

A few days ago I posted a little article about how I feared that I had become a link whore. Today I read this warning shot from John Chow about the dangers of being, shall we say a rank enthusiast and going beyond the call of duty to improve your blog’s ranking. Worth a read in case, like me, you’ve contemplated it. source: JohnChow.com

This is sadly, ultra-cool in my opinion. These days there is so much emphasis placed on website usability and look and feel that it’s refreshing and nice to see somebody take it all back to brass tacks. Mark Woodman. Truly inspired IMHO. via: Tom Raftery

Up until now fast food and phones have always gone hand in hand. “Hello XYZ Pizza.” “Yes, I’d like a extra large special delivered to…” Now, however, it has gone one step further. McDonalds and DoCoMo in Japan are offering people the ability to pay for their burgers and fries using their mobile phone as an e-payments system. Scary… source: BBC NEWS | Technology
